UAE Visa Cancellation: Who Cancels It, and How Long You Can Stay After

The road out of Dubai towards the desert in the last light of the day

Only the sponsor can cancel a UAE residence visa — you cannot do it yourself. For an employment visa the labour contract and work permit are cancelled at MOHRE first, then the residence permit at ICP or, in Dubai, GDRFA. How long you may then stay depends on which authority you read: ICP publishes four grace periods, GDRFA Dubai publishes one.

That last point is where most people get caught. There is no single national grace period published anywhere, and the number you have heard is probably the right answer to somebody else’s question. This guide works only from what the authorities publish, names the authority behind each figure, and is explicit about the gaps. If you need the cancellation handled, our UAE visas service covers it.

Who cancels it, and in what order

u.ae is unambiguous on the first point: “Normally, only the sponsor can cancel your residence visa. You cannot process the application on your own.”

For an employment visa, the order is set out on the same page: “If a company decides to cancel an employment visa of its employee, it must first approach Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation with an application to cancel the employee’s labour contract and labour card. The employee must also sign this application. Then, the employer should apply to ICP for visa cancellation.”

The employee’s signature is a requirement, not a courtesy. And the work permit is a third step: the company “must submit a letter signed by the employee stating that he has already received all his wages and end of services benefits” to MOHRE.

GDRFA Dubai builds the MOHRE step into its own conditions. Its residence cancellation service lists three requirements: the sponsor’s passport, the sponsored person’s passport, and “An extract of work permit cancellation issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (if the employee works in the private sector).” Under terms and conditions it states it more bluntly still: “A cancellation from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation.”

So the sequence is labour first, immigration second. Arriving at an Amer counter without the MOHRE cancellation is the most common wasted trip in this process.

Dependants come before the sponsor

“An individual sponsoring his/her spouse, children and other dependents must cancel the dependents’ visas before he cancels his/her own.”

ICP says the same and adds the alternative: family permits “must be cancelled before his residence is cancelled, or placed on hold for a limited period with applicable fees.”

There is also a guarantee route for a sponsor changing employer, which ICP prices at AED 5,000. It applies “when there is an approval for the sponsor’s status change to another employer and the sponsor meets the required salary and occupation conditions for all family members, and when the sponsor’s residence permit is valid or within the legal grace period after expiry, and the residence permits of the family members are valid for not less than three (3) months.” ICP does not say whether that AED 5,000 is refundable.

An “exceptional cancellation” exists for hard cases: ICP accepts it “if it is based on exceptional circumstances such as the presence of disputes or in the event of the guarantor’s death.”

The grace period: three official answers

This is the part worth reading twice.

ICP publishes four tiers, by category:

Grace period Who it applies to, in ICP’s words
180 days “Golden, Green, and Blue Residence holders and their family members, widows or divorced women of residents, students after completing their studies, and foreign-passport holders who are relatives of UAE citizens”
90 days “skilled workers in levels 1–3 and property owners”
60 days “residence permits issued with a guarantor or host”
30 days “all other categories”

All four are quoted from ICP’s cancellation service card.

GDRFA Dubai publishes a flat 60 days: “After the cancellation or expiration of the residence permit, there is a grace period of (60) sixty days during which you may remain in the country.”

u.ae summarises it as six months: “UAE residents are granted longer flexible grace periods that reach up to 6 months (according to resident category) to stay in the country after the residence permit is cancelled or expired.”

All three are current and official. The ICP tiers and u.ae’s “up to 6 months” reconcile — 180 days is six months, and the qualifier “according to resident category” is doing the work. What no official page reconciles is GDRFA Dubai’s flat 60 days against ICP’s tiers, or says which applies to a Dubai-issued employment visa. We are not going to resolve that for you, because the authorities have not. If your visa is a Dubai visa, plan on 60 days and confirm with GDRFA; if it is one of the federal emirates, find your category in ICP’s list.

ICP also does not publish a mapping from “skilled workers in levels 1–3” to job titles or occupation codes, so for most employees the 90-day tier is not something you can check for yourself.

What happens when it runs out

“A fine of AED 50 per day is applied for remaining inside the UAE starting from the day following the end of the grace period of the residence permit, depending on its type”. u.ae confirms the rate was standardised: “visit, tourist and residence visa overstaying fees have standardised at AED 50 per day. Those overstaying on a residency visa will have to pay AED 50 each day (AED 50 per day instead of AED 25).”

There is one recorded exception, and it is narrow. On 4 March 2026 ICP waived overstay fines for people caught by airspace closures, and the waiver explicitly reached “residents who had cancelled their residency permits in preparation for departure. The exemption applies to fines incurred on or after 28 February 2026.” That was a specific decision for specific circumstances, not a standing rule.

The “cancellation paper” does not officially exist

People search for it constantly. No UAE government page uses the phrase “cancellation paper”, “cancellation certificate” or “cancellation proof”.

What the document is officially called is GDRFA’s wording above: an extract of work permit cancellation issued by MOHRE. That is the piece of paper the phrase refers to, and it comes from the labour side, not the immigration side. If someone asks you for your cancellation paper, that is what they mean.

Where it is actually done

u.ae gives two routes: “There are two ways to cancel your visa. You can do it either through a registered typing centre or online.”

The typing-centre route: “The sponsor may visit any typing office registered by ICP in the respective emirate. The typing office will fill the cancellation form on your behalf and process it online through ICP.”

The online route is ICP’s website or app, and it “requires you to login using UAE Pass”. ICP’s published steps are: submit the application, review and adjust the retrieved data, attach documents if the automatic retrieval fails, pay the fees, and the residence permit and the linked Emirates ID are cancelled together. ICP gives a completion duration of 2 days.

In Dubai, GDRFA offers the same choice — its smart services with UAE PASS, or an Amer centre where you take a ticket and hand the file over. GDRFA gives an expected completion time of 48 hours.

One thing worth noting: the Emirates ID is cancelled with the residence permit, in the same transaction. You do not cancel it separately.

The fees each authority publishes

Quoted exactly, by authority. Do not add these into a single total — the two authorities charge on different structures and neither publishes a combined figure.

ICP, cancellation of residency permits:

  • Application fees — AED 50
  • Smart services fees — AED 100
  • Exceptional residence cancellation fee — AED 100
  • Guarantee for cancelling the sponsor’s residence without cancelling the family’s — AED 5,000
  • Financial guarantee deposit fee — AED 20

GDRFA Dubai, cancellation of all types of residence permits:

  • Residence permit cancellation — AED 100
  • Knowledge dirham — AED 10
  • Innovation dirham — AED 10

Entry permit cancellation is a different service with different fees. ICP charges AED 50 to cancel an entry permit plus AED 100 smart application fees; GDRFA charges AED 50 plus the two dirhams. And ICP restricts it: “Cancellation of the visa is permitted only if the applicant has not entered the country, and the request must be submitted before the end of the visa’s validity period prior to entry.” If the person has already arrived, this is not the service you need.

u.ae’s own position on fees is worth keeping in mind: “Visa charges are stated on each service card on the websites of ICP and GDRFA-D.” That is the authority telling you to check the card rather than trust a summary — including this one.

Checking the status yourself

For Dubai, GDRFA’s status inquiry service, which it describes as a way to “verify entry/residence permits, establishment cards and more”, at smart.gdrfad.gov.ae. For Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, ICP’s smart services at smartservices.icp.gov.ae.

u.ae publishes the phone routes too: ICP on 600 522222, and GDRFA on “800 5111 if you are in the UAE. If you are outside the UAE, call on +9714-313-9999.”

What is changing

The Work Bundle now covers cancellation for employers. u.ae describes it as bringing together “the issuance, renewal, and cancellation of work permits and residency visas, as well as medical examination and fingerprinting services required for Emirates ID issuance — all through one integrated bundle”, cutting the process “from 15 (requiring 16 documents) to just 5 steps (requiring only 5 documents)” and in-person visits from seven to two.

For employees nothing changes: the sponsor still files, and the two-stage shape is the same.

What is not published anywhere official

  • The term “cancellation paper”. No government page uses it.
  • How many days an employer has, after the last working day, to cancel the work permit or the residence visa.
  • Any MOHRE fee for cancelling a work permit or labour contract.
  • The procedure, documents or fee for cancelling a residence visa when the holder is already outside the UAE.
  • Whether the grace period runs from the cancellation date or from the date it is entered in the system.
  • Which grace period applies to a Dubai-issued employment visa, given GDRFA’s 60 days and ICP’s tiers.
  • Which job titles fall inside ICP’s “skilled workers in levels 1–3”.
  • How long MOHRE’s cancellation step takes. ICP publishes 2 days and GDRFA 48 hours for their own step only.
  • Whether the AED 5,000 family guarantee is refundable, how long dependants’ permits may be “placed on hold”, or what that hold costs.
  • What happens to a bank account, a health insurance policy or an Emirates ID in practical terms, or in what order.
  • Whether any employment ban follows cancellation, or how long one lasts.
  • What a typing centre or Amer centre may charge on top of the government fee.
  • Any total end-to-end cost for an employment visa cancellation.
  • Any separate procedure or fee for free zone or DET-licensed employers.

Our advice — practical guidance, not a rule

Marked as advice because no official page prescribes it.

  • Get the MOHRE cancellation in hand before you go anywhere near the immigration counter. GDRFA lists it as a requirement, and without it the trip is wasted.
  • Cancel the family’s visas before your own, or arrange the guarantee first. The order is published and it is not flexible.
  • Assume the shorter grace period, not the longer one. If your visa is a Dubai visa, the only figure GDRFA publishes is 60 days; the 180-day tier belongs to specific categories, and employment visas are not among the ones ICP names.
  • Clear fines before filing rather than during. Unpaid fines stop a transaction rather than slow it.
  • Keep a copy of everything you sign. The employee signs both the labour contract cancellation and the end-of-service letter, and those are the documents that prove the sequence later.
  • Check your own status online after the cancellation rather than taking anyone’s word that it has gone through. Both authorities publish a free status check.
  • Count the grace period from the cancellation, not from your flight. If the dates are tight, book the flight around the grace period rather than the other way around.

Fees on this page come from ICP and GDRFA service cards and were checked on 12 October 2026. GDRFA service cards carry no content date at all; ICP’s cards are dated December 2024 while its site footer updates daily — confirm any figure before you rely on it.

If the status screen is where you are stuck rather than the paperwork, our guide to “visa record matched” and the other UAE status messages explains what is and is not published about them.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to cancel a visa in the UAE?

It depends which authority. ICP publishes AED 50 application fees plus AED 100 smart services fees for cancelling a residence permit. GDRFA Dubai publishes AED 100 for the cancellation plus a AED 10 knowledge dirham and a AED 10 innovation dirham. Neither publishes a combined total, and neither includes whatever a typing centre or Amer centre charges for its own service.

How many days does visa cancellation take in the UAE?

ICP gives a service completion duration of 2 days; GDRFA Dubai gives an expected completion time of 48 hours. Both figures cover their own step only — neither includes the MOHRE labour contract cancellation that has to happen first, and no official page states how long that takes.

Can I go to an Amer centre to cancel my visa?

In Dubai, yes. GDRFA publishes the Amer route alongside its digital channel: visit the centre, take a ticket, and submit the application with the required documents. You will still need the MOHRE work permit cancellation extract if the employee is in the private sector.

How long can I stay after my visa is cancelled?

That depends on your category and your emirate. ICP publishes 180, 90, 60 or 30 days depending on the residence type; GDRFA Dubai publishes a flat 60 days; u.ae describes it as up to six months according to resident category. After the grace period ends, the fine is AED 50 per day.

Can I cancel my own visa?

No. u.ae states that normally only the sponsor can cancel a residence visa and that you cannot process the application yourself.

What is a visa cancellation paper?

It is the informal name for the extract of work permit cancellation issued by MOHRE, which GDRFA requires before it will cancel a private-sector employee’s residence permit. No official page uses the phrase “cancellation paper”.

Does my Emirates ID get cancelled too?

Yes, in the same transaction. ICP’s published steps end with cancellation of the residence permit and the linked Emirates ID card together.

What happens to my family’s visas?

They have to be cancelled before yours, or placed on hold for a limited period with fees. If you are moving to a new employer there is a guarantee route, which ICP prices at AED 5,000 and attaches conditions to, including that your family’s permits have at least three months left.

Can my visa be cancelled while I am outside the UAE?

No official page sets out a procedure, documents or fee for that. The closest published rule is a different one: a residence visa is nullified automatically after more than 180 continuous days outside the country.
