Attestation for a UAE Employment Visa: When It Is Required

Attestation for a UAE employment visa is not required for every job. The federal portal says certain jobs require it, names the order the stamps must come in, and sends some professions to the Ministry of Education on top. Which jobs is the part nobody publishes as a list.
This guide quotes the published sequence, says plainly where the list is missing, and separates what the state requires from what an employer may ask for anyway. Our attestation and translation service handles the chain; our guide to degree attestation for the UAE covers the certificate itself step by step.
When it is required
From the federal portal’s preparing to work page, updated 24 September 2026:
“Certain jobs require expatriates to present attested academic certificates to complete residency and employment procedures.”
Certain jobs. Not all of them. The page does not publish which, and nor does any other official page we read. That gap is the single most useful thing to know before you pay for anything.
The order the stamps must come in
For a certificate issued outside the UAE, the portal sets out two steps in sequence:
- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the country that issued the document attests it first.
- Then “the document can be attested by a UAE Embassy or Consulate in that country by applying through digital channels.”
If there is no UAE mission in that country, the portal says applicants can contact MoFA “for assistance via its call centre or approved channels”.
For a document issued inside the UAE, the relevant government entity attests the original, submitted through MoFA’s digital channels; electronic documents need a QR code or a link.
And on top of that: some professions also need university degrees attested by the Ministry of Education.
Some professions need an exam as well
Attestation is not always the last hurdle. The same page states that some professions “require expatriates to pass local professional exams before being licensed to work”, naming physicians and lab technicians as examples. Those exams are run by the Ministry of Health and Prevention or by the local health authority — DHA in Dubai, DoH in Abu Dhabi.
It also notes that some roles, such as lawyers appearing before judges, are limited to UAE nationals.
Where attestation sits in the visa timeline
The portal publishes the surrounding dates, and they are tighter than people expect:
- “expatriates must ensure their passport is valid for at least six months”.
- An entry permit “remains valid for two months from the date of issue”.
- After entry, the sponsored person completes the residency procedures within one month.
ICP’s own residency permit service page publishes a different figure for that last step: the stay “does not exceed sixty (60) days from the date of entry for the purpose of completing the residence issuance procedures”.
One month and sixty days are not the same. Both are official and neither page reconciles them, so we print both and leave them standing. The practical reading is that attestation needs to be finished before you fly, not after, because neither window is long enough to run an embassy chain in another country.
The medical runs in parallel
Attestation is not the only pre-condition. Everyone 18 and over sits the medical fitness test, and the same portal page publishes the screening list under Cabinet Resolution No. 5 of 2016. Our guide to the visa medical and medical typing sets out the conditions tested for, the outcomes the portal publishes, and who to ask if any of it affects you.
What is not published anywhere official
- Which jobs require attested academic certificates. The portal says certain jobs and names none.
- Which professions need Ministry of Education attestation on top of the MoFA chain.
- Any fee for the embassy or consulate step, which varies by country and is set by each mission.
- Any processing time for any step in the chain.
- Whether a certificate attested for one employer is reusable for the next.
- What happens if the issuing country’s ministry will not attest a document.
- Whether experience certificates or professional memberships need the same chain as academic ones.
- Which of one month or sixty days governs completing residency after entry.
Our advice — practical guidance, not a rule
Marked as advice because no official page prescribes it.
- Ask the employer, in writing, whether your role needs it before you start. The requirement is job-specific and the list is not published.
- Do the chain while you are still in the issuing country, or while someone there can act for you. The hard step is the first one, and it is not in the UAE.
- Keep the order. Issuing country’s foreign ministry first, then the UAE mission there. Out of order usually means starting again.
- Check whether your profession also needs an exam. For medical roles the licence, not the visa, is the thing that delays a start date.
- Count backwards from the entry permit’s two months, not forwards from when you began.
- Do not buy a package priced against a list nobody publishes. If a quote assumes your job needs attestation, ask what that assumption is based on.
If you would rather have the chain run for you, our attestation and translation desk handles it end to end and tells you plainly which steps are published requirements and which are an employer’s preference.
Frequently asked questions
Is attestation required for a UAE employment visa?
For some jobs. The federal portal states that “Certain jobs require expatriates to present attested academic certificates to complete residency and employment procedures”, without publishing which jobs those are.
What is the order of attestation for a foreign degree?
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the issuing country first, then the UAE embassy or consulate in that country through its digital channels. Some professions additionally need the degree attested by the UAE Ministry of Education.
What if there is no UAE embassy in my country?
The federal portal says to contact MoFA for assistance via its call centre or approved channels.
Do I need attestation before or after I arrive in the UAE?
No page prescribes it, but the published windows are short: an entry permit is valid two months from issue, and residency procedures must be completed within one month of entry on the federal portal, or sixty days on ICP’s page. A foreign embassy chain rarely fits inside either.
How much does attestation cost?
No single figure is published. The UAE mission’s fee is set by each mission in each country, and the issuing country’s own ministry charges separately.
Do all professions need an exam as well?
No. The portal names physicians and lab technicians as examples of professions requiring local exams before licensing, run by the Ministry of Health and Prevention or the local health authority.
Does a UAE-issued certificate need attestation too?
The portal describes a route for it: the relevant government entity attests the original and it is submitted through MoFA’s digital channels, with a QR code or link required for electronic documents.
