Abu Dhabi Family Visa Through ICP: What Is Published

the Corniche waterfront with the skyline beyond in warm late light

An Abu Dhabi family visa is handled by ICP, not by GDRFA, and ICP publishes its own conditions, its own fee lines and its own fines. Most of what circulates online describes the Dubai route. This page quotes what the federal authority actually publishes for the emirates it serves.

If you live in Dubai, you are under GDRFA and the figures here are not yours. Everywhere else — Abu Dhabi included — the authority is ICP. Our UAE visa service files either route; our guide to salary and housing conditions for a family visa covers the income test in detail, and the family visa document checklist covers the paperwork.

Who you can sponsor

From ICP’s residency permit service, published and last updated 11 December 2024, for family members of a foreign resident: a spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25, and children with special needs.

The federal portal’s page on residence visas for families, updated 28 September 2026, adds that “Both, employers and employees with valid UAE residence visas can sponsor residence visas for their families”, and that green visa holders may sponsor first-degree relatives.

The income and housing test, in ICP’s words

ICP: “Financial solvency must be demonstrated, with a minimum monthly income of AED 3,000” plus employer-provided housing, or AED 4,000 without housing. Adequate housing and proof of kinship are both required.

The federal portal states the same test the other way round: “The sponsor must have a minimum salary of AED 4,000 or AED 3,000 plus accommodation.” It does not define what counts as accommodation, and neither does ICP.

What ICP asks you to bring

Quoted from the same service page, for a family of a foreign resident:

  • Passport and personal photo
  • A utility bill
  • Proof of kinship — an attested marriage contract, children’s birth certificates
  • Birth certificates or special-needs documentation
  • An employment certificate showing family income and housing
  • Valid health insurance
  • An identity card copy for nationals of Afghanistan, Iran or Iraq

Note the employment certificate: ICP wants income and housing evidenced on one document, which is not how every employer writes them.

How long the visa runs

This is the line that answers most of the questions people arrive with:

“Family residence matches the sponsor’s permit and cannot exceed it”.

So a dependant’s visa is not chosen from a menu. It follows the sponsor. Our guide to one, two or three year family visas goes into what that means in practice and why the fee still changes with the length.

Two other durations ICP does publish, for different sponsors: a GCC national sponsor gets “Two-year renewable residence … may be issued for one year”, and a UAE national sponsor gets “A 5-year renewable residence permit”.

Fees and fines ICP publishes

Line Amount
Application fee AED 100
Issuance fee, per year AED 100
Smart service fee AED 100
Financial security deposit fee AED 20
Status adjustment AED 500
Overstay, after the entry permit expires or is cancelled AED 50 per day

Completion time is published as 2 days. Smart services run 24/7; customer happiness centres keep working hours.

The issuance fee being per year is the detail worth carrying away. A longer permit is not a different product, it is the same fee multiplied.

The sixty-day clock, and a figure that disagrees with it

ICP: “It is required that the foreigner’s stay in the UAE does not exceed sixty (60) days from the date of entry for the purpose of completing the residence issuance procedures.”

The federal portal’s preparing to work page, updated 24 September 2026, says the sponsored person completes the procedures within one month of entry.

Sixty days and one month are not the same number. We are not going to reconcile them for you — ask ICP which applies to your entry permit, and plan on the shorter one if you want a margin.

The medical, and the grace period

Family members aged 18 and over must pass a medical fitness test. Our guide to the visa medical and medical typing covers what that involves and what the federal portal publishes about it.

On expiry, the federal portal states that dependants get a six-month grace period, and that the family’s permits are “linked to the residence permit of the sponsoring family member”. Note that other official pages publish 60 days for grace periods in other circumstances; our guide to visa cancellation sets both out without reconciling them.

What is not published anywhere official

  • What counts as adequate housing. Neither ICP nor the federal portal defines it.
  • Whether Abu Dhabi applies any emirate-level condition beyond the federal ones.
  • A published total for a family visa. ICP lists the fee lines separately and gives no sum.
  • Whether the AED 20 financial security deposit is refundable, and when.
  • Which of the sixty days or one month governs completing residency procedures.
  • Whether a dependant can hold a shorter permit than the sponsor by choice.
  • What happens to a dependant’s permit if the sponsor’s is cancelled mid-term.
  • Any published processing time at a typing centre or service centre, as against ICP’s own 2 days.

Our advice — practical guidance, not a rule

Marked as advice because no official page prescribes it.

  1. Check which authority you are under before reading anything else. Dubai is GDRFA. Abu Dhabi and the rest are ICP. The two publish different fees and different fines for the same family.
  2. Ask your employer for one certificate that shows income and housing together. It is what ICP asks for, and it is the document most often issued in the wrong shape.
  3. Get the marriage contract and birth certificates attested early. Attestation is the step that runs on somebody else’s timetable.
  4. Count your sixty days from entry, not from when you started gathering papers. And treat one month as the safer reading.
  5. Do not plan a dependant’s visa length independently of your own. ICP publishes that it cannot exceed yours.
  6. Keep health insurance valid through the application. It is on ICP’s document list, not an optional extra.

If you would rather hand the file over, our UAE visa desk files to ICP or GDRFA as your emirate requires, and tells you which figures are published and which are not.
