UAE Family Visa: 1, 2 or 3 Years, and What Decides It

A UAE family visa duration is not something you pick — ICP publishes that a dependant’s residence matches the sponsor’s permit and cannot exceed it. One, two and three years are the sponsor’s lengths, inherited. What does change with length is the fee, because it is charged per year.
That single sentence answers most of what people are really asking when they search for a one-year or three-year family visa. This guide quotes it, shows where the money goes, and sets out what the official sources do not say. Our UAE visa service handles the file; see also our guides to the salary and housing conditions and the Abu Dhabi route through ICP.
The rule, quoted
From ICP’s residency permit service page, published and last updated 11 December 2024, under family members of a foreign resident:
“Family residence matches the sponsor’s permit and cannot exceed it”.
There is no menu. If your own permit runs two years, your dependants’ run two years. If a renewal gives you three, they can have three. A longer dependant visa than the sponsor’s is not something any official page offers.
The durations that are published, and whose they are
| Sponsor | Published duration |
|---|---|
| A foreign resident sponsoring family | Matches the sponsor’s own permit; cannot exceed it. No standalone figure is published. |
| A GCC national sponsor | “Two-year renewable residence … may be issued for one year” |
| A UAE national sponsor | “A 5-year renewable residence permit” |
| A student | “The residence duration is determined by the study program”, plus 180 days after it ends |
Green Residence runs five years and Golden and Blue Residence ten, each on their own conditions. Our guide to the Golden Visa routes covers those.
Worth noticing what is absent: the federal portal’s page on residence visas for family members, updated 28 September 2026, publishes no dependant duration at all. The only length on it is the five-year visa for a UAE citizen’s family.
Why the length changes the bill
Because ICP charges the issuance fee by the year. Its published lines:
| Line | Amount | Scales with length? |
|---|---|---|
| Application fee | AED 100 | No |
| Issuance fee, per year | AED 100 | Yes |
| Smart service fee | AED 100 | No |
| Financial security deposit fee | AED 20 | Not published |
| Status adjustment | AED 500 | No |
ICP publishes the same per-year structure for Green Residence at five years and for Golden and Blue Residence at ten — “issuance for a 10-year duration, per year”. The pattern is consistent: the state charges by the year whatever the headline length.
No total is published for any of them, and we are not going to add the lines up and present the result as a price.
What actually decides your own permit length
Your permit comes from your category, not from a preference. ICP’s page sets out the categories and their conditions — employment, investor, property owner, retiree, student, Green, Golden and Blue — and each carries its own duration and its own tests. The family visa then follows whichever one you hold.
So the practical question is never “can I get my wife a three-year visa”. It is “what runs my own permit to three years”, and that is a different enquiry with a different answer.
What is not published anywhere official
- Whether GDRFA Dubai applies the same matches-the-sponsor rule. The quoted line is ICP’s.
- Whether a dependant can be issued a shorter permit than the sponsor by choice.
- What happens to a dependant’s permit when the sponsor’s is cancelled part way through.
- Whether the AED 20 deposit is charged once or per year, and whether it is refundable.
- Any published total for a family residence permit at any length.
- Whether a dependant’s permit can be extended to match a sponsor’s renewal mid-term, or must be reissued.
- Any dependant duration on the federal portal, which publishes none.
Our advice — practical guidance, not a rule
Marked as advice because no official page prescribes it.
- Ask about your own permit first. The dependant’s length is a consequence of it, not a separate decision.
- Budget per year, not per visa. The issuance fee is published per year, so a three-year permit costs three times that line.
- Do not pay for a promise of a longer dependant visa. ICP publishes that it cannot exceed the sponsor’s.
- Renew in the right order. Yours, then theirs — theirs is measured against yours.
- Treat any quoted total as somebody’s estimate. No authority publishes one.
- If you are in Dubai, confirm the rule with GDRFA. The sentence this guide rests on is ICP’s, and we have not found GDRFA’s equivalent.
If you would rather have it worked out against your own permit, our UAE visa desk checks what you hold, what that allows your dependants, and what the published fees come to at that length.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a 1, 2 or 3 year family visa in the UAE?
Not as a choice. ICP publishes that “Family residence matches the sponsor’s permit and cannot exceed it”, so the dependant’s length is whatever the sponsor’s permit runs.
How long is a UAE family visa valid?
As long as the sponsor’s residence permit. The federal portal publishes no dependant duration at all, and ICP publishes only that it matches the sponsor’s and cannot exceed it.
Why is a 3-year family visa more expensive?
Because ICP charges the issuance fee per year — AED 100 per year — on top of the one-off application, smart service and deposit lines. Length multiplies one line, not all of them.
What decides my own residence permit length?
Your category. ICP publishes separate conditions and durations for employment, investor, property owner, retiree and student routes, and for Green, Golden and Blue Residence.
Can my wife have a longer visa than me?
No. ICP publishes that the family residence cannot exceed the sponsor’s permit.
What does a UAE family visa cost?
ICP publishes AED 100 application, AED 100 issuance per year, AED 100 smart service, AED 20 financial security deposit and AED 500 for a status adjustment. It does not publish a total.
Does the same rule apply in Dubai?
The quoted rule is ICP’s, which covers Abu Dhabi and the emirates outside Dubai. GDRFA handles Dubai, and we have not found a GDRFA page stating the same rule, so confirm it with them.
